Classrooms

Kindergarten is the foundation of a child’s learning experience. At Lumberg we are integrating Purposeful Play and OG curriculums to balance a whole child learning experience.  
Students in our Dual Language classroom in kindergarten learn 80% of the day in Spanish to ensure that they are fluent in reading, writing and speaking in their native language before English proficiency.

First grade continues to teach students how to “do school” focusing on routines, rituals and school wide expectations. Students are learning how to read, foundation skills, and the structure of numbers.

Students in our Dual Language classroom in first grade continue to learn 80% of their day in Spanish working towards 70% of the day by second semester.

Second grade builds upon first grade skills and concepts providing students with time to practice and become fluent in the foundational skills.  A strong emphasis still in learning to read and the basis of how numbers work.

Students in our Dual Language classroom in second grade learn 70% of their day in Spanish and 30% in English.  This breakdown looks different throughout the year based on the content being taught and the needs of the students.

Third grade is a big transitional year for students. They begin to go from learning how to read to reading to learn. New skills and concepts are introduced and the skill of multiplication and division is added in along with multi step word problems. Students also begin to learn more about friendships and strategies for coping and working through new emotions.

Students in Dual Language classrooms in third grade learn 60% of their day in Spanish and 40% in English striving for a 50/50 by the end of the year.

How a student reads by the end of third grade greatly determines success in high school and post graduate work. It is important that all kids by the end of third grade know how to read and write at grade level standards.

Fourth grade is a fun year!  Kids have a solid foundation of how to read and write and perform mathematical equations that now they get to explore deeper learning through the texts they are introduced to and the deeper level thinking strategies put in place.  Students are collaborating, doing group projects and beginning to go out into the community to make real world connections to their learning.

Students in Dual Language classrooms in fourth grade learn 50% of their day in Spanish and 50% of their day in English. The percentage breakdown depends on the content being taught and the unit of study they are in.

Fifth grade is a year to take all they have learned and apply it by learning tasks that incorporate multiple content areas.  Students in fifth grade also have the opportunity to go to Young AmeriTowne and engage in the Growing and Changing curriculum.

Students in Dual Language classrooms in fifth grade follow the same model as fourth grade continuing to work towards biliteracy.

Students in fifth grade also have the opportunity to join beginning band and orchestra classes twice a week and perform in articulation area concerts.

Lumberg is one of few schools in Jefferson County that still has sixth grade at the elementary level.  Our priority is to provide a middle school experience for our students within the elementary walls.  Providing leadership opportunities through B.I.O.N.I.C., Outdoor Lab school and incorporating electives when we are able to.

Students in Dual Language classrooms in sixth grade follow the same model as fourth grade continuing to work towards biliteracy.

Students in sixth grade also have the opportunity to join advanced band and orchestra classes twice a week and perform in articulation area concerts.
