Safety

Safety at Lumberg Elementary

The safety of our students, staff, families and community is top priority. Allowing all stakeholders to feel safe when at work and school creates a positive learning environment for all.

Signing Students Out

Before any student is checked out of school, the guardian requesting to check the student out must have contact information in Infinite Campus as either a contact or emergency contact. If you are not registered to pick up the student, you will not be able to take him/her out of school. Work with administration will then be done on a case by case basis.

Visitors

We encourage parents and other adult relatives to visit our school. This not only gives them the opportunity to observe the work that is being done, but it also gives them insight into their child’s relationships with others. We request that they call the teacher and/or Admin to arrange a time that will be most beneficial to everyone. Additionally, please monitor the duration of the visit so that rigorous teaching and learning continues. If parents wish to have a conference, they have been asked to make an appointment with you in advance.

Students are not allowed to have other children as visitors during the instructional day. This can be disruptive to the classroom routine, teachers, and students. For safety and security reasons and per Jeffco policy, all persons entering the school, even for a few minutes, must sign in at the office and obtain a visitor’s tag. Please help us enforce this expectation by gently reminding parents to return to the office for check-in if they are not wearing a visitor’s badge.

Before an adult or high school/college student volunteers to work with your students in your classroom and/or assists with grading, they must complete a Confidentiality form and the Jeffco Background Check.  Please make sure to send any volunteer who may work with students to the Principal/Financial Secretary to complete both forms.  This process is complete by the Principal/Financial Secretary.   She will notify the teacher once the Jeffco Background Check is approved. Reminder, a Background Check must be completed and approved BEFORE any volunteer works with students.

Smoke, Drug and Alcohol Free

All Jeffco Schools are smoke- and drug-free. If an employee wishes to smoke, it must be done off school grounds. It is requested that this type of need be fulfilled far enough away from school to avoid providing a negative role model for our students. Drugs and alcohol are also prohibited from possession or use on school grounds.  Visitors and renters of building space must also comply.

Weapons

Carrying, bringing, using, or possessing a weapon in any school building, on school grounds, in any school vehicle, or at any school sponsored activity without the authorization of the school or the school district is prohibited.

Safety in Jeffco

Jeffco Public Schools is committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our students and staff. The Department of School Safety & Security takes pride in providing the safest environment for all students. All staff, students and school communities deserve an environment that is welcoming and without threats, bullying, intimidation and harassment.

To receive important emails, texts and phone calls, families must keep their phone number and email updated in Infinite Campus.

The district has over 150 safety and security staff in Campus Security, Dispatch, Emergency Management, Armed Patrol and Judicial Services/Behavioral Threat Management working 24 hours a day to protect schools.

All Jeffco high schools and many middle schools have a successful School Resource Officer (SRO) program thanks to strong partnerships with every first responder and Law Enforcement agency in Jefferson County.

Emergency Communication

The fastest way to get information in an emergency situation is to follow Jeffco on X and Facebook (@JeffcoSchoolsCO) and check Jeffco’s homepage on the website for alerts.

The SchoolMessenger system uses what families enter into the Infinite Campus Online Registration system for contact information. Families must ensure this information is always updated.

Your Role: What Families Should Do in an Emergency

  • Stay away. Do not go to the school. This may interfere with procedures. Only public safety personnel will be allowed in or near a school during an emergency situation.
  • Do not call. Do not call the school or security staff. We understand you may want to communicate with your student during an emergency, but calling may prevent them from hearing important instructions.
  • Be informed. Monitor your phone, email, district social media channels, local law enforcement or fire social media channels and local news. Jeffco provides fast and accurate information to its community. In some situations, accurate information can take a long time to verify and share. Please be patient.
  • Be ready. When you are asked to pick up your student, come quickly and bring your identification to the reunification location communicated to you. Jeffco will only release students to adults listed on that student’s Infinite Campus page. Make sure anyone who could pick up your student in an emergency is listed. This can include neighbors, friends or other family members.

Jeffco Emergency Plan

Jeffco’s emergency plan covers all five phases of emergency preparedness: Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery.
